Chief Morris Beardy’s Headdress Ceremony

On February 7th, Chief Beardy received his ceremonial headdress in front of the the Fox Lake membership, Council, out of town delegates and representing working partners at the Fox Lake School Gym.

The Gym was nicely decorated by the Fox Lake School staff and students and did an excellent job. It was nicely set up where representatives from the Town of Gillam, Hydro, Sodexo, R.C.M.P, Gillam Frontier School all sat in front of the ceremony area and had front row viewing of the sacred ceremony. Due to the sacredness of the ceremony, pictures were not allowed at this time.

We had out of town delegates, Grand Chiefs Cathy Merrick, Garrison Settee, and Walter Wastesicoot attended as well as Chief Wastesicoot from York travel to attend the ceremony. Robert Wavey did the emceeing for the event and Chiefs Wastesicoot and Chief Bluesky did the introduce/walk the Chief around the room once they put on his headdress. We had Gillam School Grade 5&6’s students present handcrafted homemade headdresses made of safety pins, beads and feather and given to each of the out of town Chief’s. Thank you to the teachers of Gillam School, Nicole Friesen and Kayla Bewer for bringing your students to gift the handcrafted headdresses to the Chief’s who travelled from out of town to attend the ceremony.

There was also a drum group from York Landing who had who did a song during the ceremony.
